Our Luthiers

Our Recreations of Buddy Holly's original 1943 Gibson J-45 will be built by some of the world's finest luthiers.  Each guitar will be individually hand-crafted, will bear one fret from Buddy's original guitar, and will wear a replica of Buddy's original cover, each hand tooled by Susie Temple of Rawhide Custom Leather  Here is our still-evolving list of luthiers

  • Rick Turner and his team of devoted artisans at Renaissance Guitars.  In 1990, in an example of art imitating life, actor Gary Busey, fresh from stardom in The Buddy Holly Story, bought Buddy's original guitar and brought it to Rick for restoration.  Rick will build "Rave On" for Graham Nash and "Oh Boy" for Jackson Browne.
  • Tony Klassen.  Tony, a long-time collector and very fine player, is an expert in vintage, American steel string guitars.  He builds his guitars under the moniker ARK (Anthony R. Klassen) New Era Guitars.  He has built "True Love Ways" for Peter Asher and is working on "Peggy Sue" for Peter Frampton.
  • Howard Klepper.  Howard is the world's only guitar repairman turned lawyer turned philosophy professor turned world class luthier!  And, he's got a bold, innovative eye for guitar design.  Howard is building the "Not Fade Away" pair for Vince Gill and Amy Grant.
  • Dale Johnson.  Dale is a guy who can build a brand new, 70 year old guitar!  His "Fairbanks Guitars" (a family name) function like magnets for those who play blues, ragtime, and other variations of the Americana musical form.  Stay tuned to learn which of our artists will be privileged to possess a Fairbanks guitar.
  • Dan Roberts.  Here's a guy with a guitar-building pedigree!  A third generation wood worker, Dan worked with the Flatiron, Gibson, and Santa Cruz instrument companies before building guitars under his own name.  We'd fill up this page if we listed every artist with whom Dan has worked.   Stay tuned to learn which of our artists will be privileged to possess a Dan Roberts guitar.
  • Alister Atkin.  Buddy Holly was bigger in the UK than in his homeland.  So, it's fitting that one of the UK's finest luthiers, and perhaps its best builder of vintage-inspired instruments, has joined us on our journey.  A 1995 graduate of the London School of Furniture, Alister has a received numerous awards and the the endorsement of a legion of artists.  He'll be building  "That'll be the Day" for Mick Jones and "Maybe Baby" for "Sharleen Spiteri."  Here's the latest in-progress photo from Alister (click on image for larger version):
